What Does A Forensic Engineer Do?

By Essie Osborn

Forensic science involves the investigation of criminal acts where mechanical failure is experienced. An example of this is when the brakes on a car fail and a man's wife was killed while driving the vehicle. It may even involve investigating why the foam tiles on the space shuttle Challenger fell off and caused the shuttle to disintegrate once it re-entered the earth's atmosphere.

Forensic engineers investigate accidents to determine the reason for the event. They need to find out who was responsible for the event and how that particular type of accident can be avoided in the future. This form of engineering is used to investigate and analyze manufacturing procedures in an attempt to limit the costs, stop failure of the parts, improve the product's quality and increase the longevity of the equipment.

To be effective at their jobs, they should have detailed knowledge related to the potential reasons for failure of materials. They should have knowledge of the application of structure loads and how the system movements are controlled. They need to have knowledge of the workings of electrical systems and how electrical faults may cause damage.

These specialists generally have good knowledge of the laws related to public safety and are often used as witnesses in courts of law to provide scientific and technical evidence. It is imperative that they have a good understanding and knowledge of the principles related to business management. The need to keep updated on new rules and practices implemented to prevent the failure of engineering systems.

This sector of engineering offers the individual a range of specialization areas. This includes environmental monitoring, engineering science and mechanical technology, among a host of others. If an individual has an interest in the manufacturing environment, they may choose specialism in various manufacturing processes.

The engineers are normally employed in the insurance and manufacturing industries. There is potential for employment in government agencies and as a forensic consultant. Depending on the field of specialism, there may be prospects for these engineers in the police force.

The practical aspect of this career includes examining broken sections and put together a list of possible reasons for failure of the mechanisms. The reasons should be investigated. The engineer conducts interviews with those involved in the accident to find out what the sequence of events was. The specifications, operational procedures and drawings will be reviewed by the engineer. The dimensions used for building and the operating parameters are normally compared to the design requirements to determine any discrepancies. An engineer with this type of specialism will make use of special testing and analytical tools to confirm the findings related to fact.

It is required that you study an engineering bachelor's degree of four year's duration to enter this field. This type of program is not available at all higher education institutes. Once you have attained your degree, you need to become licensed. This requires experience and training to achieve. After the license has been gained, certification in engineering is required. This is a one-year process where you have to demonstrate technical knowledge, experience and ethics. You will need to undertake a written and an oral examination to obtain the certificate.
