Why Fire Retardant Coatings Are Suitable For Most Surfaces

By Essie Osborn

Fire can be quite a menace sometimes; it makes investments that have been accumulated in years to go down in shambles. That is why most materials need to be protected with fire retardant coatings. Building materials, executive cars, airplanes and other structures would be safer if they were fire proofed. In case of an outbreak, at least the harm will not be all that great.

Safety needs to be prioritized whenever a structure is being erected for whatever purpose. It is not enough to take an insurance cover for your property. It also pays to prevent it from the menace that can come from fire. Non conductors are preferred for these coatings. These should be installed by people with vast knowledge in this area so as to avoid mishaps. The installation of an electrical system should be thoroughly tested for the possibility of short circuiting.

Some of the coatings are in form of paint that is fireproof. If applied on wood, the wood becomes automatically tough and resistance to any scorching effect. Water based coatings work efficiently since fire can easily quench a flame if mixed with the right chemicals. However, the mixture is made in such a way that it becomes adhesive and able to stick to surfaces.

The surface on which the coating is applied needs to be highly adhesive. That is the only way it will augur well with the chemicals. It also needs to be fast drying so as to be more durable. Its charge must be neutral since positive or negative charges form pathways that heat can follow and blaze up. Water possesses all these qualities and that out rightly makes it the most desirable choice. It is good at converting heat to a non flammable form of energy.

Buildings aside, there is also need to make vehicles fireproof. Those vehicles that are used to carry highly valued personalities like presidents normally have this feature. However, there is a need to even make it available to all vehicles on the road. No one can have prior knowledge of an accident. Protection thus becomes the only sure way to deal with it.

Aircrafts also require this protection. They normally put the lives of many people at risk whenever there is a small hiccup resulting into inflammation of the engines. There is need for their manufacturers to apply vigilance when assembling the parts to make sure all are in good working condition. Finally, coatings that are flameproof also should be fitted. Most deaths normally can be avoided since they occur when the plane has touched ground. If it were fireproofed, there would be no danger whatsoever.

The materials used for coating should however, meet some required standards. Apart from preventing the harm from flames, they also should be free of harmful and poisonous chemicals. Some chemicals are known to be non conductors of heat but are highly corrosive. Such should be avoided at all costs. Poison is more dangerous as it leaves longer lasting negative environmental impact than fires.

Since surfaces vary, manufacturers are called upon to consider variety. They should be flexible in terms of the various situations they can tackle. Things like mattresses are easily consumed by fire. Thus, they need to be well sealed and protected. Many structures are normally made of wood. The wooden parts are thus required to be well protected.
