The Finer Points Of Indie Rock Music Video Promotion

By Eric Stone

Music moves people. In cases of people who exercise with a dedicated workout playlist, this is to be taken literally. But music is also an artistic expression, the language of the soul, so to speak.

The culture of celebrity has always fascinated the masses. From the gladiators of ancient Rome sponsoring products to the sex symbol status of various starlets to the adulation heaped upon wave after wave of digital influencers, human society has never been starved for idols. In olden times, statues of these idols were commissioned, not so much in modern times. In the modern era, some of these idols do not become idols at all. They stay underground. They are loved, yes. But only by a handful. But to get that love requires a bit of indie rock music video promotion.

Typically speaking, a singer or a band will start out as independent, performing smaller venues and then attracting the attention of a major record label. Once they are signed, they are given all the resources that a record label believes that their talent is entitled to. But an indie rock band will always be without a record label, since the indie in indie rock is short for independent. Of course, without a corporate benefactor a band will go without the benefits that a corporate benefactor provides.

Breaking out is never easy. Many artists can have the full backing of a record label, and that includes the hype machine, and still fall flat on their face. There is no secret to success, no formula to stardom. What does wins fans over for one performer may not work for another.

But social media has made promoting somewhat easier. Constant promoting across every social media platform can bring in some new fans. A single viral tweet can bring in hundred or even thousands of new listeners.

But simply promoting about something on the internet is enough. People actually need to see the band perform. As such, an act must take its show on the road and tour, either as part of a sponsored festival or by themselves. This means long weeks on the road.

But getting back to the actual video itself. Anyone can record a music video nowadays. The only items that are necessary are a good phone with a camera and a computer. A halfway decent video can be an exorbitant cost however.

But above all else, the song should be good. Fans can forgive a crappy video. In fact, most people will only play a video in order to listen to the song.

The world can be far from nice. In fact, it can be downright mean. Talent does not always get recognized. So those with talent must find some way to make themselves known, to put their names out into the world and into the consciousness of the people.
