Steps On How To Make Homemade Essential Oils

By Annabelle Holman

Essential oils have already been used for therapeutic and medicinal purposes since ages ago. Aside from that, they have been used for culinary reasons, as well. These essential liquid are extracted from flowers, plants, and even peelings of citrus fruits.

With this, there is a possibility that a person can make his own essential oil. Several steps are to be followed on how to make homemade essential oils. However, the final outcome of this homemade process will not be as potent as essential oils that can be purchased commercially.

The easiest and most effective method for creating homemade oil would be the process of distillation. This process is one of the three commonly utilized processes with extraction and expression as the other two. There are other methods, as well, that are being employed by different people.

To begin with the procedure, the person should be able to bear in mind several things. Researching the plant where the fluids are to be extracted should be a priority since distinct herbs produce a variety of results. He may use flowers, spices and fruit rinds, as well. The herbs should be thoroughly cleaned and should be free from pesticides and other chemicals.

The apparatus that the producer will be using for the process is a still. Stills can be bought in commercial stores but they may be expensive and may cost him a lot of money. If he wants, he can try building a homemade still, instead. The handmade still should have a separator, a condenser, a tank or pot, and a furnace.

The producer can gather his raw materials from his backyard if he has planted homegrown plants before. He needs to exercise extra care in handling them so that they will not be destroyed. If he needs to purchase the materials from the nearest market, he should take note that the materials are in good shape and should still be in whole form.

For a large amount of yield, it is recommended to dry the materials to be distilled. Drying should not mean exposing the plants to direct sunlight. They should be dried inside a closed room or under the shade. Doing this will mitigate the oils that could be lost. Once dried, they should not get wet again.

The pot or holding tank should be filled with water at this point. The pot should be filled with clean, possibly filtered water or distilled water. The dried herbs will then be placed inside the heated tank and left to boil. Depending on the quality of the material used as well as its quantity, the heating step may take up to several hours.

When the distillation process is finished, the maker should filter the oil collected using a cheesecloth or other fabric. He must ensure the cloth is dry and clean so as not to contaminate the liquid. The final product should then be poured in glass containers and stored in cool and dark locations.
