Managers say that blogs and writing samples are invaluable to them when they talk to a job candidate at the entry level. Candidates have to show proficiency with spreadsheets and graphics editing. It's important that job applicants be familiar with the music scene and have opinions about the promoters they admire and why.

To become successful in this business you have to be detail oriented. You must decide what kind of promoter you are going to be. Some just want to throw parties, and others specialize in booking celebrities into clubs.

The most successful promoters made it a point to attend shows in all kinds of genres. They went to jazz clubs and operas. They also attended electronic dance music festivals and rock concerts.
