Boronizing As A Type Of Surface Hardening

By Janine Hughes

This is the process through which boron, which is a metal, is introduced into another metal or alloy. It is used to make metal surfaces become hard. Boron atoms are introduced onto a metal surface. This is for the purpose of making it hard to wear. Below is full information concerning boronizing as a type of surface hardening.

This process makes the materials be able to last up to five times longer than when they were subjected under other types of hardening. This method is also known as boriding and it can be achieved in a number of ways and this includes packing the piece of metal in a boriding mixture and heating it to a temperature of nine hundred degrees Celsius.

One of the most common metals whereby this procedure is applied is in steel. This metal corrodes very fast if not treated in advance. Alloys of nickel can be used during the treatment process and others like aluminum are best avoided because they are not fit to be applied in this process. Steel alloys can also be added to the list of materials used during the treatment phase.

Once this process is done, there are a number of properties that the new material now attains. These include improved hardness; they then become hard to wear out. They are also able to sustain a high exposure to heat and they are also less likely to be affected by strong acids. To add on to this, friction is also able to be sustained. This makes machinery be able to last longer and be in a better condition.

Another important trait attained is the ability to have high melting and boiling points. This is a very important factor especially because these types of metals are used in the various factories and industries to carry out varying processes. Most of the processes require a lot of heat and hence these hardened materials become the most preferred ones.

There are a number of application areas for such kind of materials. To begin with, the agricultural sector deals with a lot of machinery especially the tractors which are usually used for farming and harvesting. Its important that such are made of strong durable metals which do not wear easily. This technique can also be applied to those equipment used for drilling oil in the oil fields.

The whole process does not really take a long time as within a period of two hours it is done. The use of laser beams during the procedure is useful in making sure that the properties of the material used at the base remain the same. A high amount of heat should also be ensured for the process to be successful.

To sum up the above, this is a very important process which is supposed to be upheld by all means. Each year, the industries lose a lot of money due to wear and tear of their machinery. They have to incur more expenses buying other equipment and carrying out regular maintenance. This can be avoided by applying this technique which brings about profit instead of losses.
