Prisoner Transport Systems And Tips In Transporting Them

By Leticia Jensen

In the previous decades, prisoners or those who were convicted of crime were often transported using enclosed wagons. Some still do use these types of prisoner transportation. Today, police agencies have now used retrofitted vehicles equipped with all security tools to ensure fast and safe transport.

Mentioning security, prisoner transport systems of today are now using bulletproof glasses, segregated compartments, and meshed windows. There might be a different compartment for police officers escorting these people as well. This will secure the life of an officer especially when they are away from back up and are isolated during the route.

Some advanced security technologies are also deployed during the route. Few of these could be radio communications, advanced weapons, global positioning, and CCTV cameras that are accessible by certain police agencies. These technologies will further ensure the safety of the officers and would be serve as proof of evidence in emergency cases, especially cameras.

Usually, convict transportation vehicles are provided by the criminal justice department. They can be spending millions to maintain these for the safety of the public. However, some states have already partnered with private companies to provide them with these services. This can help them cope with budget cuts and delegate tasks to providers so they can optimize their public services.

Before utilizing these private automobiles, the department would run through a series of compliance test. These test will check if it can confidently cater the needs of the prisoners and secure the life of the officers as well. Few of the test would include checking the space and the comfort level it has for the person inside. Other things would then focus on overall vehicle condition.

Moreover, convict transportation is a difficult job to do. There have been officers getting hurt and prisoners getting harassed in the past. This is the reason part of this writing is about how to securely transport a convict. Below are the details how to do such.

To start with, ensure to fully search the person even if previous officers have done it. It is a way to ensure that the prisoner has nothing under the sleeve that might prevent safe transfer. Furthermore, it is advisable to position yourself properly to avoid gun snatching.

Then, it should be clear to follow the non disclosure SOP at all times. They may not be your enemies but their motivation to get out is powerful enough to hurt you. Also, avoid answering personal questions from them and keep yourself safe at all times. You may not know what they are capable of so be careful.

Lastly, no matter what happens do not stop the vehicle. This will risk your life for a possible ambush or a possible escape. Before you leave, get everything ready and prepared. If you are hungry, keep a brown bag of food. In addition, do not stop even if prisoners will tell you they need to urinate without back up.Worst comes to worst, if they are about to have a heart attack, wait for reinforcement or backup for assistance before doing anything. Letting a split of a second decide between life and death is not a good move.
