Eagles Tribute Bands And Others 70s Rockers

By George Fox

The Eagles are a long-lasting, internationally acclaimed rock band from California that formed in 1971 and remain popular well into the 21st century. The band was composed of drummer and co-lead vocalist Don Henley; multi-instrumentalist Bernie Leadon; bassist and backing singer, Randy Meisner; and the late Glenn Frey, who played guitar, piano and keyboards. Other notable bands of the 60s and 70s include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, the Allman Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Derek and the Dominoes, and Deep Purple. Hardly surprising, there are a handful of Eagles tribute bands.

Formed in 1968 in London, England, under the name the Yardbirds and then the New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin kicked off the careers of guitar legends such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, all of whom are in Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitar Players. The members of Zeppelin were Beck, Page, Chris Dreja, Keith Relf, and Jim McCarty.

Despite releasing only a single album, Derek and the Dominoes made a huge mark in rock music history. Layla, the title track to their album, was borrowed from a fifth century Arabian poem about unrequited love. The story bore similarities with Clapton's forbidden love for Pattie Boyd, married at the time to Clapton's pal, George Harrison, a Beatle. Boyd eventually divorced Harrison and married Eric Clapton in 1979. They, too, ultimately split up.

The Allman Brothers formed in 1969, a product of Florida sunshine. Dubbed the fathers of Southern Rock, the band drew inspiration from elements of jazz, blues and country. Duane Allman, arguably the leader of the group, perished in a motorcycle accident in 1971. The following year, fellow band member Berry Oakley was also killed in an accident involving a motorcycle. Some friends believed that Oaklely's depression at the loss of Allman led to the crash.

Fleetwood Mac got together in London in 1967. The Anglo-American male/female quartet launched an album, Rumours. The album sold more than 40,000,000 copies and went down in history as the 8th best-selling album ever. From Rumours came four singles that soared to the American Top Ten.

The popular album, "Dark Side of the Moon, " was the product of Brit rock band Pink Floyd. Two memorable tracks from this album are The Wall and Careful With That Axe, Eugene. The former title was later made into a feature length film.

Deep Purple hail from the County of Hertfordshire in southern England. Their specialty is hard rock and heavy metal. A pub on the border between Hertfordshire and Essex called the Rising Sun, or Sid's to the locals, is a hugely popular real ale haunt and would have undoubtedly inspired the band to greatness.

Maintaining the London-California-Florida triangle of rock superstars, Lynyrd Skynyrd hail from Jacksonville. They experimented with a string of band names, including My Backyard, Noble Five and One Percent, before finally calling themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd. They are best known for their hits, "Free Bird, " and "Sweet Home Alabama."
