Utilization Of GPS Machine Control Files For Construction Work

By Mayra Pierce

GPS or Global Positioning System has now been included in the earthmoving industries. Heavy equipment manufacturers are now applying this technology in their procedures. These are for land grading, roads, causeways, railway beds, levees, dams, berms, and canals.

A lot of advances in technology had led to modifications and innovations to provide efficiency and cost effective production which is why these developments are being made. The utilization of GPS machine control files is one of these developments and applications for earthwork. It reduces a lot of cost for production and fastens the pace for work.

By the end of the 1990s, leading heavy equipment corporations have been applying this innovation and dominated the market sector for this technology while advancing it even further. The system works by simply comparing the position of the current location with the blade of the graders. It indicates the difference while being able to adjust them automatically. The GPS then comes into place for this procedure.

A lot of 3D and 2D software are now developed to assist this procedure. The model of the topography is then imported and visualized in these 3D and 2D programs for the operator to conveniently study the area even further. Many companies are developing software of their own while also upgrading and improving them after each revision to provide better accuracy.

There are two types of systems that are being used in earthmoving for the heavy equipment industry. They are simply categorized as Indicate Only and Fully Automatic. These two systems can use one or also two of the receivers. Having only one would limit the guidance system in the orientation of the position of the machine. Having two would allow two points of the position which gives also the angle of the machine in relation to the site plan.

In order for accuracy with this use, there should be an accurate site design as well. The design file that came from an engineering firm can be imported into the GPS display. Some guidance systems will also allow the user to define the grade elevation and angle without the specifics of the original design.

The heavy equipment that can be installed with guidance systems are as follows. Motor Graders, Scrapers, Hydraulic Excavators, and Compactors. Having that installed would make the machines more efficient and productive in terms of accuracy and cost effectiveness. Having this can give less manpower or on site workers.

For one machine it has a cost of about one hundred million dollars. If used efficiently, it can be thirty percent more productive than the traditional methods. Due to the high accuracy, there is less materials that are needed and cost. That is why most construction projects have GPS as a requirement in order to lessen the cost.

The limitation is only due to obstructions of the signals and including the surrounding environment as well. Considering the location and environment of the production site should be done in order to have the guidance system to work at its best. Nearby buildings and their roofs can obstruct the signals from the satellite and can make dead zones. Even so, Global Positioning System is still used in advanced Earthmoving due to its advantages and efficiency.
