Let The Micro Mosaic Jewelry Art Fascinate You

By Karina Frost

Imagining the world without a single hint of jewelry is like being trapped inside a room with nothing but dull walls. This is one reason why jewelers all over the world are admired for their works. Without them and without their creations, this place would lack the color and vibrancy that it has now.

From seashells and beads, as the time passed by, jewelries have also changed in for and nature. And in the middle of the evolution of creating jewelries, there is one particular kind that grabs attention especially for art experts. That is the micro mosaic jewelry.

This kind of adornment reached the height of popularity during the 19th century. During these times, many rich families from all around Europe would make the Grand Tour and take in different scenic spots from the different parts of Europe. Out of all the cities, Italy became the most famous spot. Not only because of the beautiful views but because of the creativity of the Italian artisans.

This is a kind of art derived from mosaic that makes use of small pieces of glass called tesserae. The glass particles are so small that it would require a magnifying instrument to put everything together and make the desired image. Most images would be a popular tourist attraction in Italy. There are some people who would pay more just to have their desired design made.

Pendants, earrings and brooches are the most common pieces made from this kind of art. The fine pieces of varied colored tesserae are cemented on a flat surface usually metal or stone. Some people even use glass as the blank canvas. After cementing and drying the design, it is then framed and the piece is finished.

At first watch, you would think that it is painted but if you use a microscope, there you will see the tile particles pasted in the surface to create the design. In making the piece, one would need a magnifying aid to make sure that the design is followed and precise. During the height of its fame, it would serve as a remembrance that you have been to that place.

Aside from the micro mosaic which originated from Rome, Italy, other forms such as the Florentine and the Venetian mosaic are considered as micromosaic art. Florentine art, also known as Pietra Dura is crafted by using thin and small slices of authentic stones to create an image. It is still cemented to a larger but darker stone to contrast the color of the design.

In determining the value of a micromosaic piece you need to look at the state of the jewelry, if it is good or not. The precision of the work should always be taken into consideration also and the most important factor is the size of the tesserae particle. It is said that the more minute sizes are used, the more valuable it is, thus, the more it is worth.

In hardwork and craft alone, this kind of object is priceless already. The smaller tesserae is used, the more you need to pay for it because the effort given to it is no joke. These kinds of crafts really shows the world what true art really is. It is not just beautiful but it has to have heart as well.
