Job Responsibilities Of Different Types Of DJs

By Kimberly Graham

The term disc jockey is often abbreviated as DJ. Deejay and D. J are the other term and abbreviation used respectively. These professionals specialize in mixing and playing recorded music to audiences over the radio or live. The use of the term was initially limited to gramophone records. However, it has evolved ever since to include all types of digital as well as analogue music sources. Some of the best DJs in the United States are located in Naples, FL.

Deejays are of many types. Some of them include mobile/wedding deejays, performer/guest deejays, radio deejays, and club/bar deejays. Deejays usually specialize in certain music genres and audiences. However, audiences tend to overlap, which makes them not rigid. Mixes that deejays created are at times recorded so that they are distributed or sold later.

The concept of DJ originated from the radio. Radio deejays or radio personalities work to introduce and play music to listeners over internet, AM, FM, and digital radio stations. In the course of doing their work, they promote and market artists and their music to their audiences. Radio stations tend to be specific in the kind of music they prefer to play to their audiences. This has led to some music genres being more popular than others in some places.

Club or bar deejays play music to people in clubs and bars, especially at night. They are required to understand the specific needs of their audiences so as to capture their interest. This can be seen in the specificity of night clubs in the kind of music they play to people. It is the responsibility of the DJ to ensure that people keep playing for the whole night by playing good music. They also play and mix music at parties, discotheques, and stadiums at times.

Wedding or mobile deejays often carry around a portable sound system and travel to various events to play and mix music. While working, they are required to accept requests the audience makes. One may sometimes need to repeal the whole playlist and adopt a new one presented by the audience. Being prepared with playlists to suit various audiences and events is a great idea.

Mobile deejays at times act as MCs in the events they preside over. They use public address systems to talk to people at the events and make various announcements. They know the events of the day, and so they direct the audience as necessary. They may introduce guests and make announcements on behalf of various people in the audience. They talk while playing music at the same time. Oral communication skills are needed to increase chance of success in this sub-field.

Modern deejays have adopted a wide range of equipment to help them play and mix music. Technological advancement in this field has also led to the invention of some very powerful systems and make the job easier and more enjoyable. Typically, deejays use equipment that is able to play a minimum of two sources of recorded music at the same time.

Mixing is made possible by the ability to play music simultaneously from multiple sources. One can also switch seamlessly between different recordings. There are many pieces of equipment one needs to learn how to use, and that may take some time to become efficient at.
