The History Of Christian Rock Charlotte

By Daphne Bowen

During this era, it is very common to see a band labeled as a Christian rock band by the lyrics mixed with harsh vocals and a rough guitar rift. Of course before it became common, it underwent a lot of controversies due to the conservative nature of the church and its followers during that time. Of course nowadays Christian Rock Charlotte is thriving very much and is becoming more and more popular due to the appearance of many bands out there.

Now just to give people a quick background, the church has been very much against rock music in general because they believe that the influence of this genre of music was ritual music performed by the Africans. Of course at that time, most rockstars would sing about sexual themes or even violence during those days which made everything worse. Now during that time, there were some unconventional rockstars that decided to mix the genre up with some gospel lyrics.

One of the pioneers of this kind of music would be the band that is known as the Crusaders. The Crusaders were not very popular at first due to the mindset of most Christians during that time. However, they did have their own set of followers and eventually became more popular as time passed.

Although the Crusaders were probably the first that popularized the sub genre, it was actually Larry Norman who really made this kind of music really well known. His influence is so strong that he actually became the father of Christian Rock music. It was due to the influence of this man that there were actually so many bands that followed and spiked the popularity of this specific sub genre.

During the time that glam rock and metal became famous, one striking band known as Stryper made its appearance. They were a glam band that talked about their religion and how proud they were about it. They are the ones that almost completely dominated the secular music world as not only Christians listened to them but non Christians as well.

During the popularization of thrash metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, one small Christian thrash metal band made its name also. Now this band is known as Tourniquet and they were said to be a thrash metal band that was at par with the big four of thrash metal that were previously mentioned. Of course they were not inducted into the big names of thrash metal because of their mix of genres in their music.

The nineties saw the emergence of so many more popular bands like Relient K, Skillet, and so many more. This sparked the growth of the sub genre by ten fold. The bands of this genre in fact reached the mainstream market and gained many non Christian fans.

This sub genre is definitely a growing one. The growth can be seen over the time because of the support that was given to the bands that carried the name. In fact, if one would go to Charlotte SC, many more news bands are emerging.
