The Significance Of Arc Flash Analysis

By Dorthy Lloyd

You might not expect about it but arc flash is very hazardous and even cause death to all people around the the workplace. There are some people who are not quite aware of this possibility especially the amount of danger it brings to everyone. Anyone may heard that certain explosions is hotter than the sun's surface. According to studies, electric arc is the hottest on earth next to laser. The point here is that, this phenomenon is very scary and dangerous.

That is why, people are warned with the effects of the blast. Everyone knows that arc flash is very hot. Thus, employees must wear protective gear and consider the warning labels. In order to prevent any disaster, it is important to do arc flash analysis. Employees are required to undergo training, proper supervision and a positive attitude towards the regular practices and guidelines in the workplace to prevent injury.

Keep in mind that training cannot prevent any possibility of human error. But, there are many things that are in your control and errors are avoidable with consistency.. Those errors will vary depending on your accuracy which will involves other critical details. Aside from that, electrical workers will rarely return to their previous tasks following an arc disaster. They are either maimed, killed or their life is affected.

Potential electrical risks may include electrocution, shock, blast or flash. Usually, electrical risk happens when materials are insulated and no longer containing an applied voltage. A short insulation or circuit can also create a bypass around the circuit. The generated heat by high current flows may also vaporize the material which will create arcs. It will then produce an intense heat, brilliant flash and pressure wave driving the arcing materials.

Since the demand for electric increases, most transformers at industrial and utility level are also upgraded and replaced with those having lower impedance and higher ratings. Mostly, transformers are operated in a parallel level for the satisfaction of requirements for the reliability of the system. Most of those modifications may also cause an increase in fault current and may result in electrical energy.

Employees and employers know and understand shock hazard but only few understand about the risks. This is the reason why analysis is highly recommended. A lot of companies are using electrical engineers who were dedicated to keep the system updated. However, because of reducing the budget and downsizing, this kind of function has also vanished in no time.

Danger may also happen at no definite time especially when someone is around, walking in the area and when someone is working on the equipment. A risky situation is when someone works near the equipment. This is because, the equipment can be opened, placing workers to danger because of electrical connections, conductors and other components.

The analysis is more than just measuring and calculating the fault current. The analysis usually starts with data gathering and perform a more detailed analysis containing the short circuit, load flow and protective tool coordination studies to determine whether the current rating is acceptable or not.

Knowing the importance of conducting analysis will help every individual to be aware of the possibilities in the workplace. That is why, before performing the job, it is important for anyone to have proper knowledge and ability to complete the job.
