3 Ways That You Should Be Using Video

By Phillip Noneman

I have done video production for several years now and I am still blown away by how people treat video. Everyone knows that video is a huge asset to marketing, but many business owners still don't use it. It seems like the big brands can't get enough of it and the smaller companies can't be bothered with it. If you are on the fence, then maybe you just need to see a few types of videos that are being completely overlooked.

Video Newsletter: I am not sure if I can actually think of a company that I've seen do this, but everyone should. I think many people would like to watch a couple of short videos instead of reading a couple of short articles. I do my fair share of reading, but I am a visual person and love to see examples and processes. Video feels more engaging and hold peoples' interest a bit easier.

Documentary Style Promotional Video: I do see these come out from small businesses occasionally and I love these videos. They are fun to shoot and can carry so much value in a small package. I have noticed that when I find these videos and trace them back to their company's website, the businesses always seem to be thriving. Only a few times has a "doco promo" video led me to a struggling business. I am not sure if this is attributed to the mindset of successful business owners or the success of doc style promos. What I do know, is that these videos are the best way I know of to tell a story and make an impact. Tell us why your business exists, what it stands for, show us beautiful shots of the office, people, product, and culture.

Video Emails: Whether you are pitching an idea or just thanking someone for their help, put it on video. It is not everyday that people receive videos in their inbox. These messages not only get opened, but the personal touch indicates to the viewer that you care. This helps build relationships with your audience and other business owners.

Video can seem intimidating at first, but once you know your editing software and have a workflow, video can be shot and edited in no time. It is this fear of not knowing how to do video, that prevents people from trying. I am glad that I jumped in because it has changed my business completely. I have enjoyed video so much, that I have been operating a video production company for 3 years and I incorporate video into all of my side projects.
