Gender Discrimination In Sports Media Today

By Enid Hinton

The victimization of people based on their sex is what is known as sex discrimination. It has mostly resulted from the old believes that a man is more significant than a woman. This leads to a decrease in the participation of women in many fields. They are not given equal chances and opportunities in either professional or amateur sports. Gender discrimination in sports media does not just incline to one sex, but sways towards both of them.

Sex in frequently mistaken for gender ethics. It is worth noting that sex refers to the physical body. It is either branded as man or woman depending on your features, but there are a special group of people who consider themselves as none of the above. Gender refers to socially accepted behavior that are linked to our bodies. They are the characteristics that the society defines as masculinity or feminity.

Discrimination of young men will come about when people start calling them unmanly men. This leads them to withdrawing from participating in any games. The same thing happens to women interested in game or who have talent in the sector. Thus, they are said to have lost their feminity. The unmanly man and non-feminine women are then labeled gay and lesbians respectively without considering their sexual identity. Unfortunately they are just judged by the appearance of their bodies. The judgment of these people is based on what they see. Not what makes you the person you are.

The amount of females in the sporting journalism trade is swiftly budding. This has caused a lot of controversy in recent years. Many traditionalists consider that the sporting business should be predominately for men. They have stomached a lot of criticism for breaking the mold.

Female journalists are often pushed to the sidelines to feature in short sessions before the game starts. It is also difficult for them to report when they are on the pitch since the crowd behind them will not stop teasing them. They get to watch their careers and reputations being reduced to their sexual appeal.

A long debate has been going on whether to permit or not lady reporters into the guys locker rooms. Of course most of the time they are denied access, making it advantageous for the male counterparts. Though in a case where both sexes are denied entry they blame rests on the female reporter.

Stereotypes are preset in all professions. From the very early stages of our lives, we associate specific occupation with certain genders. As we grow we fail to eliminate these thoughts and convictions. We hurt those who become victims of the circumstances and in the process we may even hurt ourselves. Growth occurs physically and mentally. We should therefore allow our beliefs to grow with us.

Breaking the stereotype barrier is not a walk in the park. Changing the thoughts and convictions of masses of people is harder than one can imagine. Our dear journalists should therefore focus their energy towards becoming better writers and reporters. In that way we will be satisfied knowing that sex cannot be a hindrance to work.
